"During the Civil War, his sympathies were apparently with the Union. In Marcus L. Penland's
pension file for Cherokee Removal, there is an affidavit by Isaac Boyles which states: 'I
remember that I interceded for old Uncle William Ray, who was here (Asheville, NC) under
arrest, and got him off.' " I did no such thing, damned geneaologists.
